In the past two years we have run 119 laps and 115 laps. Three cheers to everyone.

Chelsea Open Day – a great start to 2018

Chelsea kicked-off the new year with the successful running of its 35th annual Open Day carnival on Sunday 21 January.

Almost 250 athletes representing more than 30 centres from regions across Victoria and southern NSW including Albury, Maryborough, Shepparton, Whittlesea, Benalla, Sale and metropolitan Melbourne converged on Edithvale Reserve for the showpiece event.

Chelsea Open Day is one of the longest running among athletic centres in Victoria and sees athletes aged U6 to U16 compete in various track and field events.

Athletes set 27 new Open Day records and won a swag of medals. Chelsea athletes won an amazing 24 golds, 41 silvers and 26 bronze. Whittlesea City won the trophy for the best performing visiting centre for the third consecutive year.

The Open Day capped an outstanding month for Chelsea athletics, after success at the Victorian relay championships at Lakeside. Chelsea returned with two silver medals. Congratulations to U12 mixed 4X200m team members – Jade, Tulip, Thomas and Riley; and U12-13 Girls Medley team members Jasmine, Freya, Tulip and Monalisa.

The success came after Chelsea won eight medals at the regional titles, including four golds.

Record held since 1983 – broken!

And the run of good form has continued, with Chelsea athlete Teagan Lay smashing the Chelsea U10 girls long jump record held since 1983. Teagan jumped 4.08 metres on 15 December 2017, surpassing the previous mark of 4.05 metres.

A number of Chelsea athletes also competed at the Victorian multi-event championships at Casey on 27-28 January 2018. Special mention to U14 Claudia Cazaux who placed 4th and U10 Teagan Lay who placed ninth overall.

On Saturday 3 February 2018, Chelsea athletes turned their attention to the annual relaython fundraiser for the Royal Children’s Hospital. Athletes, parents and friends run a baton around the track non-stop for three hours. Runners will be out to surpass last year’s total of 119 laps or more than 47 kilometres. The inside running lane will be dedicated to the relay, with the scheduled program using the remaining lanes.

Victorian Relay Championships – Lakeside Stadium – Saturday 16 December 2017

Congratulations to all our athletes who ran at the state championships.

Special mention to our two silver medal winning teams – U12 mixed 4X200m and U12-13 Girls medley. Sensational outcome.

Ray White Chelsea Gift – 9 December 2017

Chelsea athletes took a break from regular track and field on Saturday 9 December 2017  for the running of the annual Ray White Chelsea Gift.

It was the 10th consecutive running of the popular 100m sprint event, which sees athletes of different ages racing and running off staggered starts.

The ‘dash for the sash’ produced close finishes and less than a second separated runners in both the junior and senior finals.

In the senior final, first place went to U10 Benji Costante, ahead of U15 Jonathan Mastorakos and U12 Thomas Whillas. In an exciting finish, Jonathan started off scratch more than 25 metres behind the front markers too almost win the event. Other senior finalists: Magdalena Dimova, Claudia Chmara, Brodie Macfarlane, Jessica Adams, Desmond Berry.

The junior honours went to U6 Xavier Kiki, ahead of U7 Jackson Watson and U8 Henry Whitney. Other finalists: Joel Dean, Beau Miller, Amelia Hough, Ashlee Hoogwerf, Leilia Gothard.

There was plenty of action off the track as well including a free jumping castle, photo booth (thanks Pikta), drawing competitions, obstacle course, give-aways and a bumper raffle supported again by Ray White Chelsea, the centre’s major sponsor and long-time naming rights supporter of the Chelsea Gift. Donations raised during the event went to the Royal Children’s Hospital.
